YG Entertainment's newest girl group, BABYMONSTER, has made a significant entrance into the K-pop industry with their debut. The group, consisting of Ruka, Pharita, Asa, Rami, Rora, and Chiquita, introduced themselves to the world with the single “BATTER UP” on November 27, 2023.
Since stepping onto the scene, these young artists have impressively broken records and garnered attention, making a noteworthy impact in the K-pop world. Let's look at some of the milestones BABYMONSTER has achieved with their debut.
SPOTIFY:
BABYMONSTER made waves with their first single, “BATTER UP," which not only showcased their exceptional talent but also marked a significant milestone for YG Entertainment. The debut single becomes the fastest song by a K-pop group in history to reach 10 million streams on Spotify in 10 days and also holds the record for the biggest first-week stream of a K-pop group debut song on the platform. Additionally, BABYMONSTER became the fastest K-pop idol group to surpass 2 million monthly listeners on Spotify.
YouTube:
BABYMONSTER’s debut music video, “BATTER UP,” managed to get over 22.5 million views on YouTube in the first 24 hours of its release and became the top-most-viewed debut MV by a K-pop act in the initial 24 hours.
“BATTER UP” MV also achieved the remarkable feat of being the fastest K-pop group debut music video in history to hit 100 million views on YouTube just 18 days after its release. It also becomes the fastest 2023 MV by a K-pop group to hit 100 million views.
“BATTER UP” debuted at #1 on ‘YouTube Daily Top Music Videos – GLOBAL.’ It is the only debut song to debut at number 1 on the Global Chart. The music video is also the most liked MV by a 2023 rookie group.
Furthermore, on the charts on iTunes, BABYMONSTER dominates the top spot in 21 countries and secures a place in the top 5 of the worldwide chart. The group has also dominated music video charts on prominent regional streaming platforms such as Japan’s Line Music and China’s QQ Music.
The records broken by BABYMONSTER with their debut have been attributed to their dynamic track, catchy hooks, and YG’s distinct hip-hop vibe. As they continue to carve their path in the K-pop scene, fans can only anticipate more groundbreaking achievements and chart-topping successes from this rookie girl group.
Speaking of a baseball term like "Batter up", Babymonster was "born on third base", meaning they didn't earn their way to first or second base. They already had a pre-made fanbase before they even debuted. Very few groups have that luxury, most other groups have to start from square one and earn their fanbases honestly. The debut was by and large a complete yawnfest, with the only ones who wanted to hear "Batter Up" again being just their fanbase. The debut was not memorable, and it was very uninspiring. The members are obviously talented, but YG hasn't done a thing to help them, only relying on said fanbase to carry the load. In fact as a "replacement" to BlackPink, YG even said they are going to have a talent search instead of using Babymoster for this type of thing, which is just a slap in the face to the Babymonster members. The group should already be promoting their next project by now with high anticipation from the public, they won't go too far if YG mismanages them, which unfortunately for them is in fact the trajectory we are seeing them on presently.
