MBC apologized for unfair practices towards HYBE artists.
On October 30, Bang Si Hyuk, the chairman of HYBE, and Ahn Hyung Jun, the CEO of MBC, held a meeting at MBC's headquarters in Sangam-dong, Mapo-gu, Seoul, to discuss cooperative measures for the advancement of the K-pop ecosystem.
This meeting was arranged following MBC's proposal for dialogue. On this day, MBC expressed regret for incidents related to artists under HYBE labels that had occurred in the past.
In 2019, BTS graced the year-end festivals of KBS and SBS. However, their commitment to perform in New York's Times Square for Dick Clark's New Year's Rockin' Eve prevented them from attending MBC's Daejejeon event. While BTS offered to pre-record a performance for MBC, the proposal was declined by the broadcasting station. Because of this, HYBE and MBC had a conflict ever since with other HYBE-affiliated artists like SEVENTEEN, TXT, ENHYPEN, LE SSERAFIM, NU'EST, and others, refraining from participating in MBC's 'Gayo Daejejeon' as well as 'Show! Music Core.'
During this meeting, HYBE and MBC have agreed to use this meeting as an opportunity to break away from past unfair broadcasting practices and establish an environment that prioritizes the rights of artists. Both organizations plan to start discussions aimed at creating a healthier production environment and expect to produce visible results soon.
K-netizens reacted, "Well, they've finally realized their mistake. It's good that they're apologizing now," "They were making a fuss, asking what's disappointing about MBC," "I don't think MBC would have apologized if HYBE didn't become so big," "They resisted without apologizing, but in the end they did, lol," "That producer should apologize," "Now we can see HYBE artists at MBC Gayo Daejejeon again?" "Do better now," "MBC is really something...Would they have apologized if HYBE hadn't become this big?" and "MBC was so bad with abusing their power."
Apologizing because they genuinely feel they were wrong or apologizing because of HYBE’s status being at the top of Kpop right now with BTS New Jeans Le Sserafim?
