Earlier this week, SM Entertainment artists officially joined the global fan community Weverse.
For the past few days, fans and artists alike have been figuring out how the platform works, how to navigate, and best ways to communicate with fans.
But while the adjustment period is still ongoing, NCT 127 and NCT Dream member Haechan's first official post on the platform has stirred up a debate on a separate K-Pop community.
The issue arose in part due to Haechan's newly revealed profile description on Weverse. When the platform first launched for SM artists, Haechan's description read,
"A member of NCT, NCT 127, and NCT Dream. It is well-known that when Haechan shouts 'Yo Dream', the other members purposely do not follow up with their team cheer, 'Jjeoreo juja fighting'. Although categorized as a vocal member, he also tends to learn and understand dance moves quickly, and is a skilled and graceful dancer."
After reading his own profile description, Haechan commented on Weverse,
"I'm sorry for bringing this up as my first post but, who wrote that description for Haechan haha. Let's have a chat."
The idol's profile description has since been changed to:
"A member of NCT, NCT 127, NCT Dream, and NCT U. He is well-known for his unique and standout vocal tone, and is capable of pulling off a variety of music genres with his vocal skills, receiving love from many fans. He also possesses a talent for displaying a broad range of expressions and gestures, as well as a graceful movements as a dancer."
Some Korean netizens accused Haechan of "calling out" the Weverse employee who wrote the original description, commenting,
"Wow, the first thing he does on Weverse is give an employee a hard time."
"That place is for you to chat with fans, not call out employees unnecessarily and then ignore the fans' who are trying to get at least one reply from you."
"I feel bad for that employee... Fighting..."
"The fact that he wrote that as his first post, and then not a single post or a reply to fans for days..."
"If I were that employee, I'd write, 'Haechan, who always belittles his own group members'."
"He's too busy watching ITZY videos to give fans the time of day."
"This one just has a terrible habit of talking in a way that looks down on others and makes them uncomfortable."
However, others clarified the situation and refuted,
"A lot of the fans found that description kind of problematic when the Weverse opened, that's probably why he wrote that post."
"That kind of joke is something that is between the fans and the artists, there's no need for an official profile to mention something like that. It's not even funny."
"I don't really know if that counts as 'calling out' the employee? Seems more like he's joking."
"The employee who wrote that first description wasn't very professional."
Why can't he do that? He didn't particularly like the way the bio was written, so he made a little joke, and it was changed. I don't see anything wrong here.
