BLACKSWAN has recently garnered much attention since last year as "The first K-pop girl group in South Korea without any Korean members."
The group's predecessor was originally a multinational girl group, 'Rania,' a mixture of Korean members and members from Thailand and Vietnam. However, due to the continued withdrawal of members, in 2020, three Korean members, Vietnamese Leah and Paturo members, were reorganized and re-debuted as BLACKSWAN.
Thereafter, all Korean members eventually left the group again. Gabi, Sriya, and Nvee joined last year, and Leia stopped promoting due to health reasons, currently making BLACKSWAN a four-member group.
Some ask them, "Why are they K-pop?" Recently, in the music industry, there has been a debate on whether a group without Koreans can really be called a K-pop group.
However, the group stated, "K-pop is singing in Korean, showcasing great songs and dances. Do you need any more explanation?” Sriya said that she studied traditional and modern dance in India and prepared to become a Bollywood backup dancer. She explained, “I was surprised when I first saw a K-Pop performance, which showcases intense choreography and singing at the same time. Actually, in Bollywood, singing and dancing are separated. It felt like I had discovered a new possibility.”
The girls stated that "K-pop's identity lies, of course, mainly in the Korean language." Therefore the members worked hard studying Korean. Fatou explained, "The other members learned Korean through books so they can speak honorifics but I learned Korean through friends, so it's hard." She added, "I almost made a big mistake when I spoke casually with one of the producers during an important meeting for broadcast."
After reading BLACKSWAN's latest interview, Korean netizens were impressed with the group's perspective on K-pop and admired the members for diligently studying Korean.
K-netizen commented, "Wow, they're good," "The song is really good too," "They're pretty impressive trying to learn Korean," "This is the process in which K-pop is becoming just a genre," "What they say is true, if they sing in Korean, it's K-pop. If they sing in English it's pop," "The song is good," "The song is very K-pop," and "I agree with what they said about K-pop."
It's only the international K stans who discredit them because they love to fetishise east Asians, particularly Koreans. Blackswan are from a Korean agency, they trained in Korea, sing in Korean and they actively promote in Korea.... Not to mention 3/4 of the group can speak Korean.
