Where talent, visuals, and charisma collide, the topic of body image often becomes a subject of scrutiny and debate in K-pop, especially for female idols.
The latest discussion on "fake body image" surrounding aespa's Karina has sparked an intense debate as many Korean netizens are expressing disgust at the netizens who are openly discussing this topic.
After aespa was invited to perform at this year's Waterbomb Festival, the girl group garnered much praise for their suitable outfits for the event. However, some toxic netizens began an inappropriate discussion stating that Karina has been promoting a "fake body image" and she "deceived people." The post has nearly 300,000 views as the toxic netizen pointed out that Karina's chest looks much flatter at the Waterbomb Festival than how voluptuous she usually looks.
This triggered other netizens and fans to defend the idol and upload other online community posts stating that Karina was actually wearing a compression bra for the Waterbomb event. These netizens claimed that Karina clearly wore a tight compression bra underneath and showed through the skin underneath her armpits.
These netizens included another example that shows the difference in chest size when wearing a compression bra and a regular bikini.
Netizens argued, "A person as thin as Karina has skin bulging out like that shows that she compressed her chest by wrapping it real tight. She's very skinny and it's very obvious she wore a tight compression bra underneath," "They definitely prepare for possible sexual harassment that's going to come about after the event. That's why she compressed her chest," and "You can see that her chest is compressed. Then why would she have skin bulging out under her armpit?"
Numerous K-netizens are disgusted with the whole debate, to begin with. Many are wondering why is this topic of discussion even exists online. These netizens expressed, "This is giving me goosebumps, it's actually a bit bizarre that people are talking about an idol's chest, whether it's real or fake. Some even are uploading photos of their bra sizes to say their breasts are big and argue that their chest can't be compressed like that. Do you really want to beat up a female idol that bad to even post photos of your bras?" "This is legendary, people uploading their bra photos to argue saying she (Karina) needs to admit she's wearing a padded bra," "This situation is just disgusting. It's repulsive that people are fervently arguing over a female idol's breasts for two days," "These people are so ridiculous. Does Karina need to do a press conference on this or something?" "It looks like Karina wore a black compression bra underneath so it doesn't cause any controversies but why are people still talking about this? it's so disgusting," and "I don't know why they're going this far when we're the same women."
You can get chest binders that compress F cups to look flat, it's nothing new. I think the focus should be on WHY people are so pressed that a female idol MIGHT have small boobs. She's not a natural blonde yet people don't seem to mind when she lightens her hair.
