Korean Influencer Targeted with Racist "Slant Eye" Taunts during her Live Stream

AKP STAFF

A Korean influencer recently came forward to expose an incident of racial discrimination she faced during an internet broadcast involving American women. Gemini Jury, a Korean female influencer based in Los Angeles, USA, took to her social media on May 13 to share a video, shedding light on the racial discrimination she encountered due to language barriers.

In the video, she recounts her distressing experience of being subjected to what she refers to as "slanty-eye" racism during a live video stream with two American women. Initially, she attempted to converse with them in Spanish, but they ridiculed her, commenting, "Your Spanish doesn't seem very good." She then asked if they could switch to English, to which she received a barrage of offensive remarks such as, "Why did you even start broadcasting?" and mocking the influencer for her inability to respond adequately, stating that they didn't want to engage in further conversation.

In a bid to conclude the broadcast, Gemini Jury bid farewell by saying "Bye" or "Ahnyoung" in Korean. However, one of the American women made a gesture of slanting her eyes with her hands, a known act of racism towards Asians. Distressed and seeking assistance, Gemini Jury inquired if anyone was recording the incident, to which they callously replied, "I hope not. Is there a problem?" This further exemplifies their mocking behavior.

The influencer posted a video capturing the entire ordeal and uploaded it to TikTok, expressing her disappointment, stating, "I have been traveling since I was 4 years old and have learned to respect other cultures" and "I hope that this post helps people realize the racism that Asians experience."

The video quickly garnered attention, surpassing 6.3 million views and sparking public outrage. One online user empathetically expressed, "I'm truly sorry that you had to endure this," and urged for the suspension of the offenders' accounts, emphasizing the need to halt such bullying. Others also condemned the racist actions, describing them as "embarrassing" and highlighting the offenders' foolishness.

Subsequently, it was reported that the accounts of the women involved were suspended. Furthermore, netizens revealed their identities, leading to the deletion of some of their social media accounts.
