On March 10, producer Jo Sung Hyun who created the Netflix docuseries 'In the Name of God, A Holy Betrayal,' held a press conference about the documentary that has created a stir. On this day, the producer talked about various topics, such as the reason for creating the docuseries and what made him overcome his fears.
Producer Jo Sung Hyun confessed that there are victims among his family and friends, so it has been a long-time 'homework' for him to cover the story of cults.
'In the Name of God, A Holy Betrayal' consists of episodes covering the stories of the major cults that rose in Korea and shed light on the four individuals who claimed to be gods. The docuseries mainly uncovers the shocking truth of JMS or Providence, the cult led by the founder who sexually assaulted many women.
Producer Jo Sung Hyun explained that the production took nearly two years, and he had interviewed nearly 200 people. He shared, "I wanted many people to know and recognize these incidents and religions to raise a social topic and awareness. I'm glad that these things are happening and that social change seems to be happening."
The producer also shared what got him so passionate about covering the story of the Pseudo-religions. He confessed, "I can't go too deep but there are victims of Pseudo-religion in my family. There are victims among my acquaintances around me." He explained that the story he told was not only the story of the victims, but it was his story as well.
While covering the story, producer Jo Sung Hyun was followed and threatened by the people related to JMS. Nevertheless, he thought that this was a topic that he must reveal to the public and make sure that there is no one else who falls victim to their organization.
Producer Jo Sung Hyun explained, "I have a daughter and a son. I get worried when they go to kindergarten. It's different from the time professor Kim Do Hyung's father was attacked and I believe Korea has changed a lot since then. However, I still worry." In another interview, the producer explained that he has been carrying around a stun gun and baton after working on the docuseries.
Good that he reveals the threats so it's hard to harm him without implicating them but revealing his weapons is kind of useless now that people know what to expect.
