South Korea's National Tax Service is cracking down on individuals, including YouTubers, influencers, and webtoon artists, who have not paid their taxes properly. Among these individuals, top celebrities are no exemption.
Amidst the various tax audits conducted by the South Korean National Tax Service, it has been discovered that top celebrities such as Kim Tae Hee, Kwon Sang Woo, Lee Byung Hun, Lee Min Ho, and more have not paid their taxes fully and had to pay additional taxes.
In response, many of these celebrities have stated that they had made a mistake on their tax reports.
Kwon Sang Woo stated through his agency Su Company and addressed rumors of tax evasion by the actor, stating, "It's not tax omission or evasion. Payment and refund occurred at the same time, so it was a report of correction."
Kim Tae Hee also clarified through her agency, saying, "Revenues were reported diligently by both Kim Tae Hee's management and her former agency, and all due tax payments were made; however, her former agency treated the revenues from Kim Tae Hee's [advertisement] deals as Kim Tae Hee's sole revenue. Due to this internal conflict, there was a delay in the reporting of these earnings."
In the same way, many celebrities were made to pay additional taxes after being audited. While these celebrities have explained that these unpaid taxes were due to an honest mistake, many Korean netizens aren't buying the excuses and commented, "They're only saying it's a mistake because they were caught. If they were never discovered to have not paid enough taxes, they probably would have just kept the money," "They should crack down on these corporations and celebrities who make so much money rather than cracking down on ordinary citizens who struggle to survive," "They shouldn't only crack down on these celebrities but they need to crack down on the rich people who evade taxes too," and "These celebrities earn money and make money off the people's love, they should at least be honest with their tax reports."
Most of them probably don’t even do their own taxes. A company does it for them
