MBC has issued a statement of apology after being accused of showing "favoritism" in the making content for the Fri-Sat drama 'The Golden Spoon'.
MBC stated on November 11, "The cast members of 'The Golden Spoon' had the best chemistry of any drama cast. The atmosphere on set was just unbelievably lively. Because of this, we feel regretful that such a controversy arose, and we sincerely apologize for causing any discomfort to viewers who love the drama and its cast members."
Previously, numerous fans raised complaints that MBC was showing "favoritism" toward actor Son Woo Hyun, who plays a supporting character in 'The Golden Spoon'. According to the drama's fans, many of the drama's recent behind-the-scenes films seem to focus on Son Woo Hyun to an exaggerated degree, with lead actors like BTOB's Sungjae, Jung Chae Yeon, Lee Jong Won, and Yeonwoo making noticeably little appearances.
Furthermore, in the case of one making film, fans claimed that MBC was "mocking" BTOB's Sungjae in a caption, which read, "Yook Sungjae admires the view of the Han river through his squinted eyes and attempts an acrostic... but once again, it feels like a fail~!"
Outside of behind-the-scenes videos uploaded by MBC, viewers also claimed that MBC posted an unusual amount of behind-the-scenes photos of actor Son Woo Hyun on the drama's community page. In one behind-the-scenes photos post, viewers said they noticed just 1 or 2 photos of Sungjae, and up to 9 or 10 photos of Son Woo Hyun.
The "favoritism" accusations were particularly regarded as unpleasant due to the fact that actor Son Woo Hyun is an artist under King Kong by Starship. The largest shareholder of King Kong by Starship is Kakao, which recently came under fire for using a rumor-based Facebook page to "promote" certain artists and "slander" others.
There was no "We'll do better" in that apology. It was more of a "We're sorry you got offended" statement. Shameful.
