In the 1990s and even throughout the second generation, it was actually more common and almost a given for idols to promote with their legal name (the last name included). However, that's no longer the case. 

With the abundance of K-pop groups debuting day by day, it can be difficult to keep track of every single member of the group, especially if groups have more than seven to eight members. And with that being said, because of the large amounts of talents debuting every year, there are many overlapping names. 

With so many reasons for using stage names different from their legal name, it's not surprising that most K-pop stars do too. However, there are still groups where all members use their legal names (minus the last name) to promote. It's becoming less common to see groups where everyone uses their birth name to promote, but, yes, they DO EXIST.
