Netizens are talking about the double standards that are holding female idols back in the industry.
On April 30th, a post on a popular online community gained attention. Titled, "These days are hard to survive as a female idol", the post soon garnered wide attention for initiating the talk about the double standards prevalent in the K-pop scene.
The original poster wrote, "When you are a female idol, you can't make a wrong facial expression because you'll be dragged for years. You can't be too thin or put on a little more weight because either way your name will be dragged as if you're a criminal, including the way how you eat things.
But when you are a male idol, you can do drugs, ignore your insurance dues, be arrested with DUIs and car crashes or any other major social issues, you'll have no problem returning to the industry after some time."
The top three comments under the post are: "It's not just recent days. This has been going on since like a decade ago."
"It's because the majority of users here are crazy about boys."
"lol y'all saying female idols did all the school bullying and stuff when male idols did illegal prostitution, assault, burning sun, and more. DUIs are also much more common among male idols."
What do you think?
I think that there are double standards that benefit male idols and others that benefit female idols, but to try and negate that is truly willful ignorance. I've never seen a male idol get nowhere near the wrath of hate that female idols get for "rude" scandals (bullying, diva allegations, fights). I've never seen male idols get judged by their body types as often and normalized as female idols, I've never seen male idols bashed for being "too promiscuous" or "showing too much" rather be celebrated, I've never seen male idols have to face rude rumors just cause they have a serious natural face. A male idol can say it and he's being firm, a leader a savage a female idol says it and she's a bitch. Heck I've never seen a male idol face a fraction of the hate when supporting female rights than females themselves.
