Renowned film director Steven Spielberg sparked controversy when his recent comments at the PGA Awards panel implied that the 'Squid Game' stars were "unknown people".
On March 19, Steven Spielberg spoke at the PGA Awards panel, commenting how Netflix has been giving more opportunities to actors who are less known, allowing them to star as the leads in different productions. Spielberg stated, "A long time ago, it was domestic stars that brought the audience into movies. Today, it's interesting, unknown people can star entire miniseries, can be in movies."
His statement soon caused anger among global fans of 'Squid Game', and they took to social media platforms such as Twitter to criticize Spielberg for his comments.
One of the major reasons for the criticism surrounding Spielberg was that the leading actors of 'Squid Game', such as Lee Jung Jae and Park Hae Soo, are well-known actors widely acknowledged for their talent and popularity in South Korea and Asia. Lee Jung Jae has starred in numerous successful films and TV series, and has maintained his top star status since his debut in the 1990s. Park Hae Soo has also starred in various popular shows such as the drama 'Prison Playbook' and is set to star in the Korean remake of 'Money Heist'.
I read the whole article. The title is worded poorly but he was talking in context of mainstream US audience since he makes movies for them. Squid Game stars weren't household names in the US before.
And before you all get mad at this, Koreans don't also know all the popular local stars from all countries until a show they're in blows up in their country.

Unless your a K-drama fan it is true that these celebrities are not well known here in the States for other dramas they’ve been in besides Squid Game. AKP causing unnecessary drama again…
