A Reflection on the Happenings of 2019

Posted by pjh31 pts Tuesday, December 3, 2019

After months and months of reading the news, watching videos, and seeing comments on Korean and international platforms alike I have decided to post this article. It's very long, but I ask that you read it with care and please, kindly state your opinions.

2019 has been a very dark year for the KPOP industry for various of reasons. We've seen groups disband, precious souls passing, and many controversial and corrupt things that happen behind the scenes. So many nasty things have been revealed to the eyes of the public and it brought along an absurd amount of hatred.

If there is something that I constantly see is how international netizens are quick to point their fingers at k-netizens.Whenever something bad happens, the blame thrown on Korean netizens and the Korean culture. The countless of times that I have seen people say "Korean netizens really need to stop being so cruel" "Why are Korean netizens so cold, do they not have a heart?" "This is the problem with Korea, they're ....." and so much more. Being a Korean myself, I admit that my country has many flaws, but so do other countries. I constantly feel like Korea is being attacked by people who do not fully understand our culture and bash it before they know why we are a certain way. I'm not saying that Korea is perfect and that there are many things that happen here that are unjustifiable, but there are other things that only make sense to those who live and know the culture.

That being said, I believe that international fans have 0 rights to point their fingers at Koreans and say that the problem is them. While on international news platforms and on social media, the amount of times that I have seen international netizens being crude with their words, bashing different artists, and spreading hate are countless. There were many times that the comments I've seen left me baffled and at loss for words. The greatest problem I see with i-netizens is, due to the language barrier, the slightest mistranslation is enough for them to completely destroy an artists when, in reality, what they did or said was no where close to what the translations stated. While I know that this isn't entirely the netizens' fault, I ask myself, is it really necessary to spread hate and be so quick to judge someone?

Second, if there is something I despise is the amount of hypocrites I see on social networks. When news regarding someone's passing is published, comments full of "Spread love" "Please be careful with what you say" are seen, but soon after, social platforms are covered with malicious comments. Something that deeply bothered me was seeing the comments under the article about Hara's boyfriend. Although everything he did was awful and I truly believe he must be punished, we have no way of knowing rather or not if he truly was devastated by her passing. However, the comment section was flooded things words such, "Beside his close family and friends, I assure you literally no one gives two fucks about his wellbeing right now. He deserves a difficult time." "He can go to hell that bastard. He threatened her with videos that he had flmed without her consent. These are already 2 crimes that makes you a monster. It should be that scum who is not alive today and not her."  Yes, I believe he deserves to be punished. But we have no rights to deserve death on someone well, to wish pain and for them not to be mentally well, no matter how bad of a person he is. How are people who write such things any different than the ones that attacked the ones that we have lost?

People who say that celebrities should bear all this pain that they feel and the malicious comments that they see because it was the life they chose should really rethink that statement. They had a dream and they were able to achieve. Of course, it's not going to be glamorous and they do need to bear some of the burden, but not this absurd amount. What is the limit? How much do they need to take on before it becomes too much? When they're no longer here? They chose a career that makes them swell with pride and joy, but we are so toxic and so judgmental that we need to scrutinize every little they do.

My heart is anguished as I see so many artists in pain. It pains me to see how much they are suffering and people mock their agony and tell them to just get over it. Words are powerful, more than one can imagine. Please, if you have nothing nice to say, please don't say anything. The world is already a cruel world as it is, must we spread further hate? Must we be hypocrites? Must we be the cause to so many mental illnesses and deaths? How many more must we kill for us to realize that our actions and words are weapons?

Thank you for your article you are right Internetz are no angel this is why call out everyone not just the Knetz... if you look at the word Netizen carefully it doesn't specify if it's only the Koreans to be but to me the Netizen refers to everyone that lives on this planet because we all live on the internet 24/7
