Media Today photo reporter Kim Chang Hyun is awarded for outstanding photojournalism.
Jung Joon Young's infamous arrival photo won the '195th Photo Report of the Month' by the Korea Press Photographer's Association.
The close-up shot of Jung Joon Young getting crushed by a huge crowd of reporters was taken on March 12 at Incheon International Airport. The singer, who was in the United States for a variety show filming, was returning to South Korea for a police investigation after his chatroom scandal blew up.
Lee Hyo Kyun of KPPA explained why Jung Joon Young's photo was selected the 'Top Excellence.' He stated, "A photo can definitely win even if it's not majestic (or serious). In Jung Joon Young's case, his issue became a controversy in society so it holds even greater value... His hat was flying off, he was getting pushed by the reporters, and the security. We gave many points on how the photo realistically portrayed the situation."
Photo reporter Kim Chang Hyun also commented on how the award-winning photo was taken. He said, "There were so many people and I was getting pushed, so I just kept clicking the shutter. The moment his hat flew off, I thought, 'Ah, I got it.' I immediately fell after taking the award-winning photo."
He added, "He committed a crime by secretly filming others. But he didn't even want to be seen by reporters in the airport so he was trying to hide and such bad photo was taken coincidentally. I feel like many people were thinking, 'Ha, you deserve it.'"
Meanwhile, the top netizen comment under the photo stated, "What does it feel like to be filmed when you don't want to be filmed?"
