As many of us may know, due to BTS’ breakthrough in the United States last year, many expected them to be nominated as Best New Artist in the Grammys. However, they did not fit the requirements to be nominated, which state that they “must have released a minimum of five singles/tracks or one album, but no more than 30 singles/tracks or three albums” (Wikipedia). Thus, BTS was not allowed a nomination.
Blackpink, on the other hand . . .
The YG girl group is said to appear on “The Late Show with Stephen Colbert” on February 11 and perform in Times Square on “Good Morning America” the day after. They will also then appear at Coachella in April. (https://news.abs-cbn.com)
Moreover, back in October of last year,YG had announced that Blackpink had signed with Interscope Records, home to famous Western artists such as a Madonna, Eiminem, Kendrick Lamar, and Lady Gaga. (www.koreatimes.co.kr)
If Blackpink makes their US debut, does really well, and can fit the other requirements for a nomination, which are that they “may not have entered into this category more than three times, including as a performing member of an established group” (Done) and “must have achieved a breakthrough into the public consciousness and impacted the musical landscape during the eligibility group” (Possible, if YG plays his cards right), Blackpink just may be eligible for Best New Artist for the Grammays next year.
If my assumptions are correct, this could explain why YG allowed Blackpink to go on a world tour with only nine or ten songs.
Of course, this is all just one girl’s speculation. YG may focus all of his attention on the new boy groups from Treasure Box (what was supposed to be one turned into three), but he always seemed interested in entering the Western market.
Anyway, what do you guys think?
It doesn't really make sense. They haven't won any american awards before not to mention they haven't won many korean daesangs. Ofc it's good to aim high but let's be more realistic and focus on domestic awards first 😊
