Choi Soon-Sil, who allegedly had influence over president Park Geun Hye and illegal access to classified information without clearance thanks to her friendship with the president, entered the prosecution office surrounded by hundreds of reporters, protesters, and spectators.
To the reporters, Choi stated, "I did wrong and I deserve to die," but her lawyer later explained that this was not an admission of guilt, but her expressing her distress.
Protests are taking place everywhere in Korea, including many university campuses, where students are declaring that the president is inept to lead a democratic country and that she should step down.
Eight aides to president Park Geun Hye including her chief of staff resigned on October 30.
