PLEDIS GIRLZ - "WE"
They turned heads on 'Produce 101,' now they're debuting as a 10-member girl group. Consisting of Siyeon, Kyungwon, Yewon, Minkyung, Eunwoo, Sungyeon, Yebin, Kyla, Nayoung and Pinky, these girls are NU'EST, After School and Seventeen's sister group. This is their new digital single "We." Members Eunwoo and Sungyeon composed the song, and Minkyung, Eunwoo, and Sungyeon penned the lyrics.
The tune doesn't start well, reminding me a lot of "For You" by Lovelyz. I don't know if that's intentional, but it's not good. The main verses, though, do have this sweetness about them that lifts my mood. By the time the chorus hit I forgot all about Lovelyz -- these girls have their own sound. Siyeon, Yebin, and Kyla handle the rapping duties in this song. The rap is, unfortunately, standard idol rapping, with all that implies. I do like the message in the song, about standing together no matter what.
The tune is kind of catchy, but also a bit bland. Frankly, I wished they'd picked a better song as a single, something with a little more fierceness. As it is, they'll probably be lost in the glut of cute groups coming out this year.
I'll be honest: I've seen better music videos. There seemed a lot of nothing going on. For the first half of the MV they were hanging out in a park, doing various aegyo gestures. Then, they're dancing in a school gym, living it up at a party, applying makeup. I think it was supposed to reinforce the theme of togetherness -- except that two members don't actually appear in the video.
I'm not sure how they could have made this any better, but you'd think they could. Maybe not drowning everything in filters after half the video has been shot might help. It just didn't hang together as well as I might have liked.
The scenes in the park looked low budget, and the rest of the sets were uninspiring. I was hoping Pledis would be spending more money on these girls. I'm hoping they do something clever next time around. This video gets a giant meh.
