REPLY 1988 - EPISODE 14

Sun Woo cries when he talks to Bora about his dad

It's now March, and Deok Seon's dad comes home with good news: the debt's been paid off, and they'll stop garnishing his wages. Everyone's happier, and Mom orders a new stove. Not only that, but they tell Bora she can go to law school now, rather than taking a part-time accounting job.

Deok Seon and her classmates meet the class president and make friends. Her classmates are much more serious than her, as they're more focused on studying. Their friend Mi Ok is not even in the same class anymore, so things have definitely changed. Deok Seon clashes a bit with their new friend over the noise level, but that is all forgotten when the class president collapses and has a seizure. When she returns, they don't treat her any differently, despite her fears. The girl's mom is so thankful that Deok Seon took care of her, and tells her so through tears.

The new girl

Sun Woo is finally able to admit the reason why he's so uncomfortable with his mom dating Taek's dad -- he feels sorry for his dad, who passed away when he was little. But his dad's ghost (or perhaps, the memory of his dad) appears throughout the episode, and Sun Woo talks with him. Dad eventually tells him that he wants Mom to be happy, and that he's not upset at all.

Deok Seon gives Jung Hwan a pink shirt for his birthday, but gets upset when she sees Jung Bong wearing it. But wait, we find out that it's not truly the birthday gift, it was a gift from Mi Ok to Jung Bong, and she merely copied Deok Seon's gift. Hyung even asks to borrow it, but we see at the end (in flashback) that Jung Hwan puts it in a drawer and says "not this shirt."

Mi Ok and Jung Bong in an awkward kiss

Mi Ok and Jung Bong give dating a try, but it goes awry when they plan to meet each other in a building with both a coffee shop and restaurant on different floors. You can see where this is going -- wherever they go, the other person is not on the same floor. Mi Ok thinks she's been stood up, and cries to Deok Seon, who tells her that Jung Bong had been there all night. She runs to meet him, and they lean in for a kiss. At the end of the night, he walks her home. She leans in to kiss him again, and he just hugs her...

I'm glad the money issues are over for Deok Seon's family. That was starting to get oppressive, and I know how hard it is when you're struggling to get by, everything's breaking down and there's no way to fix it. I can see why mom might be in a pretty foul mood, but money isn't the answer to everything. Though it was starting to get a little overused, and it's nice to see some light at the end of the tunnel. But they did talk about moving? Now that he's swinging a decent paycheck again, does that mean leaving the neighborhood?

Sun Woo's dad

I thought the way that Deok Seon and her friends treated their new pal was a really great scene. Every time I think she's just a petulant teen she really pulls out a big heart and shows it to everyone. It's also nice to see a disease that doesn't put someone in the hospital immediately. I'm hoping that that's the end of her on-camera seizures, because now that's established I'd like to move forward and find out more about her.

So now we know why Sun Woo really dislikes the idea of his mom re-establishing a family and getting close to Taek's dad. It was nice to see him talking to Dad's ghost, too, and to see them talking tenderly to each other. Of course, talking about his mom's cooking made me laugh, because he knows she's terrible. But he loves her anyway, and that just makes me like the guy more. It's also nice that now he's got the okay, maybe he can accept Taek's dad more.

Jung Hwan tucks the shirt into a drawer

Jung Hwan really has an uphill battle if he wants to get together with Deok Seon. He moves at a snail's pace, and now he's got that misunderstanding with her to clear up, if he can figure out how to do it. Jung Bong has been sworn to secrecy about the shirt by Mi Ok, so he's not telling. Maybe. Possibly? Snowball's chance? Okay, there are very few secrets in this show that don't get revealed. But hurry guy, if the conversations in this episode were any indication, Taek's planning on confessing. You may be left at the starting gate when the gun goes off.

You've stuck with me for 14 episodes, and I appreciate it. I also want to wish everyone a very happy holiday, however you choose to celebrate it.
