According to the police, the incident occurred near the Gwangnaru Station located in Seoul on November 12 around 6:25 AM. Around this time, a drunken Ms. Lee thought that Mr. Choi was giving her strange looks. She began to swear at him and then assaulted him. Mr. Choi, who struggles with a brain lesion, defended himself by using a mountain knife he was carrying to stab Ms. Lee in her buttocks. A friend of Ms. Lee who witnessed the scene reported the fight.
The police have stated, "[Ms. Lee] denied the assault, but while we were confirming the CCTV footage, she belatedly admitted to the crime." They added, "We will decide on the punishment while considering that Mr. Choi has difficulty walking due to [his brain lesion] and that Ms. Lee attacked him first."
Netizens have been debating whether Mr. Choi was right to use a knife or if he had used an excessive form of self-defense. Majority opinion seems to believe in the former opinion as comments include: "Saying that it's a crazy, excessive moment of self-defense…. Of course someone who has a disability can defend themselves like that. When he can't even control his body well how is he supposed to defend himself, do you guys want him to get beaten to death?", "I'm damn curious as to what the ruling will be," and, "You're saying that's excessive…. It's self-defense!"
