The regular Channel A program 'We're Coming to Meet You' features refugees from North Korea who reveal their past life in one of the world's most militarized countries. On the latest episode, the refugees shared that girl groups similar to Girls' Generation exist in North Korea, to the surprise of many.
Given the communist state's culture, the North Korean equivalent doesn't exactly follow the mold of girl groups that k-pop fans are familiar with; however, the top band, titled The Wang Je San Light Music Band, features talented artists that were personally selected by Kim Jong Il. With physical beauty, a vibrant wardrobe and flawless synchronization while dancing, the qualities of this band are reminiscent of the top idol groups of the k-pop world. According to the report, the wife of Kim Jong Eun, the current North Korean leader, is a member of this band.
Similar to the rigorous training process that idols in South Korea undergo, the members of 'The Wang Je San Light Music Band' participated in a series of auditions. On top of talent and looks, auditionees were required to be of certain social status to be eligible for selection. This group holds live performances that are broadcast, as well as special stages for concerts at North Korean military bases.
The report also revealed that North Korea one-ups the strict contracts of South Korean girl groups by essentially forbidding members from withdrawing, due to the security risk of exposing secrets about the leader and government. In other words, being part of an exclusive team means membership for life.
To top things off, we've got a live performance from The Wang Je San Light Music Band below. This girl group's 'stuck in the 80s' comeback concept looks very convincing... with all jokes aside, tell us what you think!
