While the US music charts is more pop consistent with "seasonal" changes (these days being club pop), the Korean music chart is a little more calculated. There are exactly two types of hits in Korea: the infectious pop hit and the emotional ballad hit. Internationally, Korean music is associated with wild, technicolor music videos and charismatic groups, but domestically, the music that usually dominates the charts is dramatic, sometimes depressing, but rich with the vocally talented.
2BiC makes their debut with composer Jo Young Soo, in their arsenal. Known for his work for astounding ballad group SG Wannabe, Jo Young Soo boasts that 2BiC is the next SG Wannabe, promising incredible vocal prowess. In fact, their logo even suggests that they were born to be singers. With much confidence and support, 2BiC has released "I Made Another Girl Cry."
"I Made Another Girl Cry" is real tearjerker both lyrically and melodically. It depicts the story of a guy unable to let go of a former lover, breaking the hearts of every rebound he gets. The guy is crying, this innocent girl who isn't getting any love is crying, all in hopes that the girl who probably doesn't love the guy any more, cries too.
Take a moment to watch the music video (though it's not a direct portrayal of the lyrics) and listen to track, and you'll probably cry too. Seriously though, the song is beautifully crafted with one of the most prolific songwriters of the Korean ballad genre, and all those things Jo Yong Soo promised earlier about the group - he wasn't kidding around.
Now is the song innovative and contemporary? Well Korea has created its own standards for the modern day ballad. In America, we may have quirky Coldplay synths and huge Ryan Tedder layered percussions modernizing the ballad, but in Korea, they stick to the classics.. or to the "classical", I should say. The production has got to be extremely clean, the instrumentals completely orchestral, and the melody absolutely compelling.
Like I brushed upon earlier, 2BiC's debut track has got a pretty specific story going on that may make their single seem like a strange choice for a debut single release. Why try to score a hit with something not everyone can relate to? Well this is sort of how the Korean ballad evolved. Rather than making a generic love song, you've got to have a unique set of lyrics to attract the Korean listener in order to have your ballad stand out within a saturated pool of other sappy love songs.
2BiC's debut title track fits this criteria perfectly and lives up to their
logo, simply put. Though we're not sure if they're going to be mere clones of SG Wannabe or an artist group with a flavor of their very own, they show a lot of promise for their releases to come.
