We reported earlier that Kwon Sang Woo had been to America for auditions to be the masked crime fighter, Kato in the Hollywood movie, The Green Hornet. But Kwon Sang Woo's Hollywood dream is over for now after Columbia Pictures announced on 8th August that Taiwanese superstar, Jay Chou will play Kato. Excerpts from the press release:
Michel Gondry, the film's director, said, "Jay is incredibly unique and charming and fights like a wild dog! When I filmed him next to Seth, they had such great chemistry, and I knew the movie will be great." Jay Chou said, "It's an overwhelming experience to take on a role made famous by Bruce Lee. I won't try to be Bruce Lee's Kato. I will try to bring my own interpretation to the part. Of course, it's a dream role, and I'm looking forward to the challenge."Famous Hongkong star, Stephen Chow was originally going to direct the film and play Kato, reprising the role Bruce Lee made famous in the 1960s TV series. But Stephen Chow later dropped out of the production to focus on another project instead, leaving Columbia Pictures to hunt for a new Kato. Auditions were called and Kwon Sang Woo was the most notable name thrown up late last month as a possible Kato. But unfortunately for him, Jay Chou has came out from nowhere to secure the role. Yet another speed bump for Kwon Sang Woo in his career.
