Democratic Party presidential candidate Lee Jae Myung admitted defeat and conceded the election, leaving opposition People Power Party candidate Yoon Suk Cheol to become the next South Korean President.
Candidate Lee Jae Myung congratulated Yoon Suk Cheol and said to him, "Congratulations, I ask you to usher in an era of unity and harmony."
Candidate Lee said at the Yeouido office on the 10th, "I did my best, but I did not live up to expectations. I would like to express my apologies to the many people who have left their daily lives behind and have been with us all over the country for the campaign - to our former captains, volunteers, and comrades and supporters who have sweated day and night.”
He continued to say, "This is all because of my shortcoming. This is not your defeat nor the defeat of the Democratic Party. All responsibility lies solely with me."
He added, "I still believe in our people. Our people were great. Everyone showed a high sense of democracy with a high voter turnout even in the midst of the COVID-19 crisis. I hope that we will overcome COVID-19 as soon as possible and return to our daily lives.”
Yoon Suk Cheol is a conservative and during his Presidential campaign, he stated he will take a more rigid stance on China and have closer relations with the United States than the previous regime. He raised some eyebrows when he stated he would do a pre-emptive strike on North Korea if they showed any signs of an imminent attack. Yoon was a prosecutor before becoming a politician and played a major role in convicting former president Park Geun Hye for abusing her power. He also served as the Prosecutor General of South Korea from 2019 to 2021 under President Moon Jae-in.
With this, Yoon will replace President Moon Jae In after his single five-year term ends in May.
omg~ i'm shocked.

Sharing cryphile's thread about Yoon SukYeol👇:
" 'WHAT'S HAPPENING IN SOUTH KOREA: Anti-Feminism and the Election of Yoon Suk Yeol, and What this Means for South Korean Women'. Yoon Suk-Yeol, a member of the Conservative party in South Korea and a violent anti-feminist, was just elected as president today.
Yoon ran his campaign on a promise to eliminate the Ministry of Gender Equality and Family, and his views have been popular among anti-feminists.
While antifeminists say that protections toward women are unnecessary and discriminatory toward men, HANKYOREH reported an increase in violence toward women last year, with nearly 500 violent femicides in 2021 alone. → https://english.hani.co.kr/art...
Per the IAR, South Korean courts are notably lenient in conviction and sentencing of sex crimes, and one woman is murdered due to sexual or gender-related violence every 1.8 days. This is statistically higher than most nations of the same size. The courts have done nothing to deter these crimes, and their silence has emboldened the anti-feminist movement.→ https://www.iar-gwu.org/blog/i...
Violence against women is a relatively normalized trope in Korean media as well. In 2016, Kim Byeong-ok posed on a cover of Maxim magazine with a woman bound and naked in the trunk of a car, with the caption 'real bad guy'.
With the election of Yoon, women in South Korea fear that discrimination and violence will rise more than it has in the past few years, and the slim protections that they do have, could be eliminated.
