Every year, there are many new words being added to the urban dictionary. And if these words are used often and long enough, they are added to the official dictionary, becoming part of the language.
Recently, one netizen explained there are two Korean slang words that have been used for decades and have become ubiquitous. The netizen posted the two words on an online community and explained how long these words have been around. These words should be familiar to international K-pop, and K-drama fans as these words have been used frequently in music and dramas.
Heol/Hul
Many must have heard the word "Heol/Hul" at least once in a drama. This is a Korean slang word that is widely used in various instances. It is a word that can be used to express dumbfoundedness, surprise, disappointment, and shock. Hul was first used in the early 2000s in an online community and has been used for over 20 years.
Jjang
"Jjang" is another word that has been around for many years and has become commonly used to mean "The best." This word first appeared in the mid or late 1990s and replaced the word "Kep," another word used to express "the best." Jjang has now been used for nearly 30 years, and even elementary students use it even to this day. The word "Jjang" has also been developed to be used in instances to express "A lot." In the mid-2000s, Uljjang or Ulzzang was also commonly used to express individuals who had the best face.
Netizens discussed how they felt about these words and commented, "Hul, Daebak, Jjang," "That's so crazy," "Those two words are just part of the Korean dictionary now," "Hul, that's so crazy," " I feel 'Jjang' has an actual word to replace but then 'Hul' doesn't have an actual word, lol" "Hul, that's so awesome," and "I feel old, lol."
