On January 10, South Korea was shocked when Kang passed away in a sudden hit-and-run accident in the city of Cheongju. According to reports, Kang was walking home after buying a bag of cream bread for his pregnant wife when a white BMW hit Kang and fled the scene. Huh turned himself in as the culprit on January 29 and admitted that he was drinking and driving, but was unaware that he had hit Kang. The police quoted him saying, "Although I knew I had an accident, I didn't know I hit a person,"
On February 11, Cheongju District Public Prosecutor's Office announced that Huh took back his previous statement, saying, "I knew that [I hit] a person, but because I was scared, I ran away."
Despite Huh's confession, Kang's parents were reported to have said, "We feel relieved that [Huh] is repenting for his sins. Once his punishment is announced, we hope he will work hard to live for our son's sake."
In other news, Kang's wife was recently offered a job at a university to help her financially while she prepares for her teacher certification exam.
