On January 10, South Korea was shocked when a 29-year-old Kang passed away in a sudden hit-and-run accident in the city of Cheongju. According to reports, Kang was on his way home after buying a bag of cream breads for his pregnant wife of seven months. A white BMW hit Kang and fled the scene.
On January 29, the Heungdeok Police received a report from Huh's wife around 7 PM KST. Huh's wife reportedly explained herself, "I was in the middle of persuading my husband when I asked the police to help me." However when the police arrived at Huh's residence, Huh had disappeared.
Huh eventually turned himself in on the same night around 11:08 PM. When reporters asked him if he acknowledged his crime, he simply said, "I'm sorry."
Police will be investigating Huh on a hit-and-run charge. They will then hold a briefing with the press on January 30.
Top netizen comments include: "How long has it been since this incident occurred that he turns himself in now? The fact that the police are saying they will take time to investigate this means they're probably thinking of giving him a light punishment.... As the head of his household, how does he sleep at night while knowing about the crime he committed? Terrible," and, "Why is he apologizing, why did he wait all this time to turn himself in? Considering he drives a BMW, he's probably in his prime and enjoying himself. They better not give him a reduced sentence. He's only surrendering because the police caught him."
