You might want to keep this jam on while you read this article because this is going to be all about combo foods! Admittedly, no one is mixing pizzas and tacos, but let's not squabble on the details.
South Korea these days is making things interesting by mixing and matching the foods for interesting combinations! Everybody loves cheese. Why not experiment by drizzling it on food for a meal never before fathomed? Why have just one or the other?
Check out the trendy combo foods below and try not to drool!
Spicy cheese grilled back ribs
Say what? So you take some grilled back ribs that have been coated in a spicy flavor and then dip them in melted pizza cheese. Why? Because, um, cheese. Also the back ribs are super, super spicy (that's how Koreans like 'em) and so the cheese helps to tone down the fire in your mouth. You can find this meal at Hahm Ji Bach.
You can just feel the spiciness oozing out of this picture. Grab that cup of water!
Just look at that bed of cheese!!! (Picture credit blueswallow3.)
Chicken ddukbokki
Everyone who knows even the minimum about Korean culture has to be familiar with one of the most popular dishes of the country: ddukbokki (sticky rice cake drenched in spicy and sweet red chili sauce with other additions, such as fish cakes, noodles, and more depending on personal preferences). Well, why not do something more interesting with it since people eat it so often in Korea? They've already added cheese. Adding ramen noodles is not that surprising.
A-ha! Another thing Koreans absolutely love is fried chicken! So why don't we just top off a plate of ddukbokki with some of that and see how they like it, right? Well, this trendy dish was first shown through a drama and has gained momentum and popularity since! Many restaurants have opened just for this dish, so looks like this trend puts a new twist on the traditional dish and will be staying around for a while.
Kimchi pizza sweet & sour pork
This is a mouthful to say! This is a very, very fusion combo dish that combines the Korean-Chinese meal of sweet & sour pork with the very Korean side dish of kimchi, then drenches this in a cheesy, pizza sauce. It's not that difficult to get these three components separately, but it's up to you to put them together!
Cotton candy latte
Psh, are you thinking this isn't a combo? It's just cotton candy-flavored latte, what the heck, allkpop? But no. You stand (or sit) corrected as Koreans these days have created a new dessert by actually mixing the two sweets. They place cotton candy on top of a latte with straws sticking out of it to satisfy everyone's sweet tooth. One popular place that serves this drink is Banana Tree, but, of course, many places are sprouting up like trees and cafes are adopting this treat to get with the trend!
Thankfully, this looks pretty easy to make even outside of South Korea... just take some cotton candy over to your favorite cafe and prepare for the weird looks from strangers around you.
What are some other food combos that you think are interesting?
