Musical actor Nam Kyung Ju (age 62) has been referred to the prosecution without detention on charges of sexual assault, drawing renewed attention to his past legal issues.
Before being formally charged on March 11 for allegedly sexually assaulting a woman, Nam had already faced legal problems, including two instances of drunk driving and one case of driving without a license.
In December 2002, Nam’s driver’s license was canceled due to accumulating penalty points from drunk driving. He faced another license cancellation in June 2003 for the same reason, claiming at the time that he had driven out of urgent necessity.
Despite his license being revoked, Nam was again charged without detention in April 2004 for driving his mother’s car without a license on a road in front of Gyeonggi High School in Samseong-dong, Gangnam District.
From 2002 to the present, Nam has reportedly been involved in legal or public controversies almost every year.
In addition, he was reportedly sent to the Samcheong Correctional Institution as a high school senior due to his problematic behavior. In 2010, during a press conference for the play 'Rain Man,' his older brother Nam Kyung Eum, described Nam Kyung Jun as “a real troublemaker” who “even went to Samcheong Correctional Institution as a high school senior. I went to the same high school and served as the head of the religious club, so I was constantly in trouble because of him.”
According to Dispatch, the Seoul Bangbae Police Station referred Nam to the Seoul Central District Prosecutors’ Office last month on charges of sexual assault. He is accused of sexually assaulting a woman last year. The victim, reportedly feeling threatened, escaped the scene and called 112.
Nam Kyung Ju told Dispatch, “It is true that this matter is currently under investigation,” but he declined to comment specifically on the sexual assault allegations.
Nam Kyung Ju debuted in 1994 with the musical 'Porgy and Bess' and has performed consistently for over 40 years. He currently serves as an associate professor in the Department of Performing Arts at Hongik University.
