Yubin, a former member of the iconic girl group Wonder Girls, recently shared her thoughts on how newer generations of female idols are covering her group's songs. The conversation took place on February 7th, during an episode of the YouTube channel I Am Gyuri.
The video, titled 'Wonder Girls, KARA, T-ara Reunite to Dance with 4th-Generation Girl Groups,' featured Wonder Girls’ rapper Yubin and T-ara’s Eunjung as guests, where they chatted with host Gyuri.
During the episode, Gyuri asked, "Are there any girl groups you like these days?" Eunjung shyly replied, "I really like (aespa's) Winter. She's so beautiful." Yubin, after a long pause, admitted, "I haven’t been watching a lot of stuff lately," and Gyuri mentioned that she liked Red Velvet and NewJeans.
Yubin reflected on how odd it feels when newer idols cover Wonder Girls’ songs. "It suddenly hit me that back in the day, we used to cover our seniors’ songs at awards shows. But now, when idols cover our songs, it feels like reality is hitting me. We’ve become like the seniors we once admired, like Fin.K.L and Shinhwa," she confessed.
Eunjung, surprised, said, "I thought they were just doing it because the songs are great." Yubin explained further, “For us (T-ara), it's been 15 years. These kids are essentially paying tribute to us. They grew up listening to these songs and that’s why they’re covering them.”
Yubin specifically mentioned how NewJeans and BLACKPINK had covered Wonder Girls’ iconic hits like 'So Hot' and 'Tell Me.' “When I think about that, it feels so strange,” she admitted.
Wonder Girls, who debuted in 2007 under JYP Entertainment, were the first girl group to be produced by J.Y. Park. They captured the public’s heart with hits like 'So Hot,' 'Tell Me,' and 'Nobody,' becoming a top group in K-pop. After Sunye’s marriage in 2015, Wonder Girls officially disbanded in 2017.
