Expectations are rising for the production of Season 2 of tvN’s hit Friday-Saturday drama 'Misaeng.'
Originally aired in 2014, 'Misaeng' became a cultural phenomenon, resonating deeply with office workers and young professionals just entering the workforce. Based on the webtoon of the same name by Yoon Tae Ho, the drama follows the journey of Jang Geu Rae (played by Im Si Wan), a former aspiring professional Go player who, after failing to qualify, embarks on a grueling corporate career.
The drama realistically portrays the struggles and hopes of office workers striving to survive in a cutthroat workplace, likening their challenges to navigating a complex Go board.
The show featured a stellar cast, including Im Si Wan, Lee Sung Min, Kang So Ra, Kang Ha Neul, Kim Dae Myung, and Byun Yo Han, all of whom received praise for their exceptional performances. Im Si Wan captivated viewers with his portrayal of Jang Geu Rae, convincingly depicting the hardships faced by young professionals. Meanwhile, Lee Sung Min left a lasting impression as the cold yet principled manager Oh Sang Shik.
'Misaeng' didn’t just spotlight the hardships of office life, it also delicately depicted the human connections formed in the workplace, delivering heartfelt moments. The realistic storyline, combined with the webtoon’s strong foundation, solid script, and exceptional direction, contributed to the show’s immense popularity.
So impactful was its portrayal of corporate life that the drama earned the nickname "The Salaryman’s Handbook."
Even after its conclusion, 'Misaeng' continued to capture public interest. A highlights compilation video released on tvN’s official YouTube channel last September received numerous nostalgic comments from viewers: "Watching 'Misaeng' reminds me of my younger self when I was a new employee and hits me emotionally," "The best drama of my life," "This drama helped me so much," "Whenever I wanted to quit my job, I would rewatch this and cry along," and "Please give us a Season 2."
Public calls for a second season only intensified after a special screening event held at CGV last year to celebrate the 10th anniversary of 'Misaeng's premiere. During the event, director Kim Won Suk hinted at the possibility of a follow-up season, sparking renewed excitement. Studio Dragon later confirmed through Newsen on January 9, "There have been discussions about producing a follow-up season, but the final decision will be made after considering various factors."
However, according to reports, formal discussions with the original cast have yet to take place. A broadcast industry insider added, "Director Kim has expressed interest in making Season 2, but concrete negotiations have not yet begun."
