Youn Yeo Jung reflects on 58 years of acting, embraces the title of ‘craftsperson’.
Actress Youn Yeo Jung looked back on her 58-year career and shared candid thoughts during a recent interview with Harper’s Bazaar.
Youn revealed that while she dislikes being labeled an “artist,” she accepts the title of “craftsperson.” She explained, “I dislike being called an artist. If someone calls me that after I’m gone, I wouldn’t know, but for now, it feels excessive. However, I do want to be considered a craftsperson. If I’ve been doing this for nearly 60 years, I think I deserve that much respect.”
Youn also discussed her role in Netflix’s ‘Beef’ Season 2, saying, “I feel naturally drawn to projects made by Korean Americans. There’s an instinctive pull to support them.” She added, “Director Lee Sung Jin shared stories he wanted to tell through me, and I found his perspective very fresh and different compared to Korean directors, who usually cast me in grandmother roles.”
Regarding her willingness to take risks in acting, she reflected, “In my personal life, I’m very conservative, but oddly, I’m adventurous when it comes to acting. Perhaps living such a measured life makes me crave bold challenges in my work.”
Youn also touched on thoughts of retirement and the value of a simple routine. “I’ve thought, maybe it’s time to retire. But even when I’m at home, I can’t read a book for more than an hour because my eyes hurt. In the end, what matters most is your daily life.” She continued, “For people who are unwell, what they want most is to simply get back to their daily routines. For me, acting is my everyday life. So I want to do my best in the roles I receive. That’s how I live my life.”
Youn graces the cover of Harper’s Bazaar’s January issue, showcasing Tiffany & Co.’s elegant high jewelry. She effortlessly wore dramatic maxi coats, structured jackets, and white suits, proving her ageless style and sophistication at 77.
