According to Hong Hye Min of Hankook Ilbo , an increasing number of K-pop award shows are being hosted overseas rather than in Korea. While domestic fans have voiced frustration over the need to cover airfare, accommodations, and tickets to attend these events abroad, many award shows continue to choose international locations due to profitability and logistical challenges.
Industry insiders reveal that hosting overseas offers greater investment opportunities and higher ticket sales, leading to substantial revenue. Popular locations like Japan, Indonesia, and Thailand, where K-pop demand is exceptionally high, attract large audiences and allow for higher ticket prices compared to Korea, boosting profits further.
Another reason is the shortage of large venues in Korea and the difficulties in securing them, which complicates the hosting of major events domestically. While organizers recognize the importance of holding award shows in Korea, they often cite practical limitations as the main reason for choosing international venues.
