'Squid Game 2' actor Choi Gwi Hwa shared his thoughts amidst the divided opinions on Season 2.
He posted, "With the mixed reviews of 'Squid Game Season 2,' let me chime in... The real game starts with Season 3. You can look forward to it."
Choi Gwi Hwa appeared as a participant in the Netflix original series 'Squid Game 2,' which premiered globally on December 26. His character, eager to win more money, votes "O" to continue the game and expresses discontent, and even threatens those who choose "X."
While 'Squid Game 2' launched to high expectations and attention, it has garnered polarized opinions as viewers compare it to Season 1. Responding to the reactions, Choi Gqi Hwa emphasized, "The real game starts with Season 3. You can look forward to it," offering his perspective as a cast member.
Director Hwang Dong Hyuk also addressed the split reactions in an interview with U.S. entertainment outlet Variety. He explained, "When I initially wrote the stories for Seasons 2 and 3, they were part of one long narrative. Originally, I planned to tell the story over 8 to 9 episodes, but by the time it was completed, it had grown to over 10 episodes—too long for a single season. I wanted to create a proper stopping point for Season 2 and then transition into Season 3. Thinking about Gi Hun's journey, it felt like the right moment to pause the long narrative and give Gi Hun some resolution."
Regarding the release of Season 3, he added, "What I can say is that shortly after Season 2 begins, the release date for Season 3 will be announced. I expect it to premiere next summer or fall. With each remaining episode, things will only get better. Every season will have a more expanded storyline, more intense narratives, and definitely more fun. So, please stick with us until the end."
Meanwhile, 'Squid Game 2' tells the story of Gi Hun (played by Lee Jung Jae), who returns to the game seeking revenge, and his fierce confrontation with the Front Man (played by Lee Byung Hun), as well as the beginning of the true game once again.
