An American YouTuber reported IU to the CIA?

An American YouTuber with over 80,000 subscribers has sparked controversy after claiming to have reported popular South Korean singer IU to the U.S. Central Intelligence Agency (CIA).

This comes after IU provided prepaid meals for participants in a protest calling for the impeachment of South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol.

On December 18, a video titled "I Reported IU to the CIA" was uploaded to a YouTube channel run by an individual who identifies as a conservative American woman.

In the video, the YouTuber, referred to as Ms. A, accused IU of supporting and inciting the impeachment protests by actively providing food for attendees. She began her remarks by stating, "Our brilliant and talented IU is actively backing those supporting the impeachment protests, even providing meals to encourage participation and fuel the impeachment atmosphere."

Ms. A further claimed, "It seems IU is trying to rally as many people as possible to strengthen the movement for Yoon Suk Yeol's impeachment. To amplify her intentions, I reported her actions to the CIA. I urge everyone to follow suit and inform the CIA about other influential Korean celebrities like her." She then shared a list of entertainers who publicly supported the impeachment movement and concluded with a vulgar remark aimed at IU, saying, "IU, let's see what happens now."

On December 14, IU's management agency revealed that the singer had prepaid for 100 servings each of bread, beverages, soup dishes, and rice cakes at various restaurants and cafes near Yeouido, where the impeachment protests were taking place.

The agency added, "Anyone participating in the protest, not just members of IU's official fan club ‘UAENA,’ could claim these items on a first-come, first-served basis," highlighting her gesture of support.

This act led to backlash from conservative online communities, where calls for boycotts of brands endorsed by IU began circulating. Some individuals also shared screenshots as proof of filing similar reports to the CIA.

Meanwhile, IU's initiative inspired others to join the cause. Mark Tetto, a former panelist on JTBC’s 'Non-Summit' and a U.S. citizen currently residing in the United States, reportedly called a restaurant in Yeouido to add 60 more prepaid soup dishes to IU's contribution.

The situation has ignited a heated debate online, with supporters applauding IU’s actions and detractors escalating their opposition through various channels.
