Actress Lee El has taken to social media to criticize the recent declaration of martial law and to express her thoughts on the nation's current state.
On December 6, Lee El posted on her Instagram Story, saying, "People shouting in hoarse voices from Gwanghwamun to Huam-dong, this rain falling upon us must be our tears." The message is widely interpreted as a symbolic critique of the chaotic social atmosphere following President Yoon Suk Yeol's recent martial law declaration.
In addition, the 57th Student Council of Sungkyunkwan University issued an official statement strongly condemning President Yoon's proclamation of martial law. The council criticized the measure as "a threat to democracy that infringes upon the fundamental rights of citizens" and accused the president of abusing his power. The statement further argued that the declaration violated Article 77 of the South Korean Constitution, emphasizing its illegitimacy.
While the martial law was lifted on December 4, the nation's political turmoil persists, with the National Assembly preparing for an impeachment vote. Lee El's public statement has drawn significant attention as an example of celebrities beginning to voice their opinions on the nation's pressing issues.
