K-pop artists are making remarkable achievements in the Japanese music market. According to the latest Billboard Japan chart (tracking period: November 11–17, 2024), K-POP artists have taken the top three spots, showcasing their overwhelming influence in the local music industry.
Reports have highlighted that K-pop artists have swept the top rankings on Japan’s Billboard chart. Billboard's news precedes its chart updates, which follow later. Stray Kids’ new album 'GIANT' secured the No. 1 spot with 446,002 copies sold, while BTS Jin’s solo album 'Happy' claimed the No. 2 spot with 223,938 copies. NCT Yuta’s debut mini-album 'Depth' ranked No. 3 with 41,214 copies sold, further demonstrating the power of K-POP.
Stray Kids’ 'GIANT', which topped the chart, maintained a similar first-week sales level to their previous Japanese album 'THE SOUND', which sold 450,808 copies in its debut week, reaffirming the group’s strong fanbase. The album includes 10 tracks, such as the opening theme 'NIGHT' and ending theme 'Falling Up' for the anime 'Tower of God' Season 2, as well as the theme song ‘WHY?’ for the popular drama 'Re- At the Edge of Desire'. A fan-club exclusive version features the special instrumental track "Christmas Love," bringing the total track list to 11 songs.
Stray Kids also claimed the No. 1 spot on the Oricon chart, Japan's most authoritative music chart. According to the Oricon Weekly Album Ranking announced on November 19, 'GIANT' debuted at No. 1 with 335,000 copies sold in its first week. This marks the group’s fourth No. 1 Oricon album following 'Raku-STAR (ROCK-STAR)' in November 2023.
Alongside these chart successes, Stray Kids achieved a major milestone at Tokyo Dome. As part of their Stray Kids World Tour, the 8-member boy group held concerts at Tokyo Dome on November 14, 16, and 17, attracting a total of 165,000 attendees. The concert opened with the message “We’ve returned with all 8 of us!” and featured 35 songs over three hours, including tracks from their mini album 'ATE' such as ‘MOUNTAINS,’ as well as hits like ‘Thunderous,’ ‘Chk Chk Boom,’ and ‘God's Menu.’ Fans were thrilled by the spectacular lighting and grand stage production, which vividly captured the energy of the event.
Stray Kids’ popularity continues to soar, with all six shows at Kyocera Dome Osaka scheduled for December 5, 7, and 8 already sold out, confirming their nationwide appeal.
Jin’s 'Happy' is being hailed as evidence of BTS members’ successful solo ventures in Japan, while Yuta’s debut has solidified his position as a standout Japanese K-POP artist in his home country.
Industry insiders commented, “K-POP artists are being recognized not only for their popularity but also for their musical quality and performance excellence.” These chart performances and the success of Stray Kids’ Tokyo Dome concerts are key indicators of K-POP’s establishment as a dominant genre in the Japanese music market. Expectations are high for even greater achievements from K-POP artists in the future.
