allkpop: First of all, congratulations on your new group project! Some of you already debuted multiple times, for some, this is their second unit debut. What is the feeling for you to be part of Visionary Vision? How different is the feeling compared to your previous unit projects?
YeonJi: The choreography for this comeback is very powerful. If you watch our stages, you’re going to see. It’s my first time doing such powerful choreography. This is definitely a first for me. When it comes to being part of Visionary Vision, it’s a very meaningful and important moment for me as well. I’m very thankful to be able to be part of Visionary Vision because this is the second time I’m debuting in a new unit. The first time I was in another unit, which was my first debut, everything was very new to me. I really didn’t know how to feel. It was the first time that I was also meeting our fans. I was a little bit scared of being on stage, but this time since it’s my second time in a new project, I do think I have improved. I thought of myself and saw myself on stage, thinking, “Wow, I did really improve this time.” I’m not so scared of being on stage anymore. I now think I can enjoy such moments when I’m performing this time.
NaKyoung: As you may know, I have debuted in quite a lot of units before, but if I’m to pinpoint a difference between Visionary Vision and the other debuts that I have previously debuted, Visionary Vision is a dance unit. The difficulty level of the choreography is a little bit harder. What makes me think that Visionary Vision stands out is that we are and I am able to show a lot more things to our fans. If I have one thing to say about Visionary Vision, it's the fact that I’m able to showcase much more within this unit.
allkpop: How do you usually decide what name to use for the new unit? Could you share with us the meaning behind or how you came up with VV?
SoHyun: Actually, we don't get to decide the name of the unit, it’s our company. But we did think a lot about the meaning of Visionary Vision. The name of the unit itself means just looking at the future, being able to look into the future. I also did some thinking about the name of the unit itself. And for me, Visionary Vision is all about the future of tripleS. It’s all about the things, all the new things that we can do — new music and new opportunities that are yet to come for us. I do hope that people will see that and the they will look forward to what else we have to show them because we have a lot in store.
allkpop: VV is tripleS’ first performance-centric unit. Previously, you’ve shown really good and fun dance choreographies, so how unique do you think this particular performance is, and in what way/s do you believe this debut makes it a dance-oriented one, or how did you work on emphasizing that aspect of this project?
SoHyun: The choreography is not very girly. It’s more about hitting things, you know, we’re hitting the floor, so we try to accentuate that with this choreography as well. It’s a choreography that has a lot of hip-hop-based steps, which you can see in our performance. It’s all about the energy, and you do need to have quite a lot of physical aspects, you need to have good fitness to be able to digest this choreography when you do it. About the music, it’s not really the usual style that tripleS music used to be. It’s a lot more hip-hop-ish. It’s a lot stronger. It’s showing a totally different side of tripleS. We also did try rapping this time. It’s very rhythmical. It’s very different from what we used to do. You can see one thing that has really changed about us this time. And because we wanted people to be able to focus on the performance itself, we all cut our hair instead of having long hair. We all came back with very short hair this time, and we hope that this aspect stands out as well.
allkpop: Which member do you think fits the concepts perfectly, especially the “boyish” one?
Kotone: Me! That’s me! (laughs) I think that I suit this concept the best because usually in my daily life, I’m very hip-hop-ish. This is a concept that really suits me. While preparing for this and while being active with Visionary Vision, I do feel like a fish in the water. It’s basically my natural habitat at this point.
SoHyun: For me, it would be HyeRin. You would not expect that because HyeRin is very girly girl. She looks very good with long hair and she’s just basically the epitome of girliness. But as she cut her hair very short and started wearing the things that our team prepared for this comeback, she looked so good. She fits this concept perfectly. One time I remember saying to HyeRin, “Wow, I cannot see anybody but you. You look so good and you fit this concept very well.”
NaKyoung: For me, it would be SoHyun. As you can see, you can tell that she fits this concept so well. She just embodies the boyish concept really well for me. It’s not only about the look but it’s also about the mood and her aura. I think that she is the closest to being the boyish in Visionary Vision.
YeonJi: For me, it would be Lynn. When I saw her dancing the “Hit the Floor” choreography, she was just so cool. She was very powerful. The dance itself is very powerful, and she's just shining when she performs the choreography, so I do think that she fits this concept the most.
allkpop: How long did it take you to memorize and master the dance choreography? Is there anything you tried or experimented with in the dance for the first time?
YeonJi: It took me three to four days to memorize and learn the choreography perfectly. As I mentioned before, this “Hit the Floor” choreography is very powerful, and it was my first time doing it. But before I got this chance, I thought to myself that I would really, really want to try a choreography of this sort. So while learning the “Hit the Floor” choreography, I learned a lot of things, especially the technicalities of dancing such a hip-hop and powerful-based choreography. The technical aspect is definitely something I learned while preparing for this.
SoHyun: The choreography that you see us performing, it’s the fixed version of the choreography. But before we got that version, we actually had so many versions of this choreography, so it’s difficult to tell and for us to say how long it actually took us to learn it perfectly because we had so many changes over time.
Kotone: Because we had so many versions, there were instances where we would be so confused. We would say to each other, “Wait, which version is the one we’re supposed to be dancing right now?” There were times we were really lost. This is something that I want to share with you as a TMI.
allkpop: Did any of the members contribute to drafting or creating the choreography? Or, is there anyone in the group who has an interest in participating in that aspect of future projects?
NaKyoung: Not really so much of the choreography but I took part in helping the members with the gestures. Especially since the song is really strong, I wanted to accentuate the lyrics in the chorus, so that was really fun for me. It was my first time doing that. But if I ever get an opportunity in the future, I would definitely want to participate in creating a choreography.
allkpop: What were your first thoughts after listening to the demo or the finalized song? Did you feel those tripleS vibes? And how did the recording process go?
SoHyun: When I first heard the song, I was really surprised because you know, if you compare “Hit the Floor” to “Girls Never Die,” there’s a big difference. Something that really stood out to me was that in “Hit the Floor,” there’s no “la la la” part that not only we but also our fans are really used to. So, I was a little bit concerned. How are we supposed to do for it to stand out for our fans to be able to say, “Yeah, this is a tripleS song"? “Hit the Floor” is very much hip-hop. The track itself goes hard. It’s a very powerful song. But as soon as we started recording and got the first demo version, it turned out really well. And as the process of creating the song went on, I wanted to show it to everyone faster. I got greedy. I wanted to show it to our fans as soon as possible. But something I was quite worried about is that my part in this song is quite short. So I was wondering, “How can I do it for people to remember my part?” I wanted to be able to shine in my part even though it’s short, and it turns out that my fans actually remembered my part pretty well! A little bit too well because they made a meme out of my part this time as well! At the end of the day, I’m really glad that my fans recognized my efforts and that they remembered my parts.
allkpop: As you said, your company and fans play a huge role in deciding which is which. But if you could choose what kind of vibes, song genres, and concepts for the unit you're next to debut in, what would they be?
NaKyoung: Up until this point, we did our best to show ourselves in a concept. We never give up even if we, if I fall, I’m going to get up and I’m going to keep walking forward. If we’re together, nothing bad is going to happen to us. We did this concept quite a lot and on the contrary, I really want to do a concept where it’s sparkly and colorful. I wanted to try something that is a different side from what we’ve shown, a 180-degree change. Something that is a little bit different from boyish because we’ve done it quite a lot so far. I want to do something that other people would not expect from us. I’m sure that we will get that opportunity one day because tripleS’s concept is the idol of all possibilities! All possibilities are there and I can’t wait to show it.
Kotone: I really wanted to do a hip-hop concept, so I’m very satisfied with this debut. But for my next one, I would want to do something that’s dreamy and fresh but also a little bit fascinating. If you look at the concept, you would think that it’s pretty bright and that it’s a happy story, but if you really indulge yourself in it, you will find some sort of nostalgia. You would feel a little bit sad about whatever we’re trying to portray. I want to do a concept that would entail those things, where you really need to get into it to be able to understand the nostalgia that we’re trying to portray.
allkpop: Lastly, share with us your goals and leave a message for your fans and allkpop readers!
SoHyun: First of all, we usually do the concept to really encourage people. We hope that when people listen to our music, they will feel the strength that we’re trying to convey. We are trying for the music to give them motivation to move forward not only for the fans but also for ourselves. In the future, I want to show not so much of a girly side. In "Hit the Floor," we want people to see that we are maturing from girls to ladies. We do have a lot to show, so we hope that you guys will keep watching and supporting us, especially allkpop readers. Thank you so much for supporting us until this point and I hope you will stay with us to see what else we have in store for you.
YeonJi: “Hit the Floor” is a hip-hop song, and a lot of things in this comeback were actually firsts for us. This song is to show the limitless possibilities of tripleS. We tried a lot of new things, and at the end of the day, tripleS is the idol of all possibilities. My goal for us is for people to be able to acknowledge us even more, not only through this comeback but also for our upcoming releases as well.
Kotone: I wish for tripleS to receive more positive reactions such as first place on a music show. I hope that through this interview, allkpop readers will get to know us a little bit better and will keep supporting us in the future as well.
NaKyoung: Through this comeback with Visionary Vision, I feel like we did improve a lot, we have shown a lot that you may not have seen before. Even though we made this comeback with 12 members, I hope that you show love and interest for all 24 members of tripleS. For our fans, please keep on loving and supporting us!
