According to recent data, Psy's Summer Swag concert has been the most frequently targeted by illegal ticket scalpers in the past year.
On October 6 KST, Rep. Kang Yoo Jung of the Democratic Party (a member of the Ministry of Culture, Sports, and Tourism) released figures showing that from November 2023 to the end of July this year, there were a total of 3,400 reports of online ticket scalping. Of these, 2,556 cases (75.2%) were related to music concerts, making it the category with the highest number of illegal ticket resales. Fan meetings and festivals accounted for 519 cases, gaming events 200 cases, and musicals 125 cases.
Most scalped tickets were traded on second-hand platforms, with 80% (2,721 reports) involving resale platforms like Danggeun Market and Joonggo Nara. Social media platforms such as Twitter, Facebook, and Instagram accounted for 626 reports.
From November 2023 to July 2024, there were 114 valid scalping reports. The Korea Creative Content Agency (KOCCA) responded to 109 cases by issuing ticket cancellations, conducting identity verifications, and suspending suspicious accounts. Among these, 44 tickets were found to be falsified, either through fake booking or seat numbers.
Out of the 65 valid actions taken, Psy's Summer Swag concert had the highest number of reported scalping cases, with 15 incidents. Other performances with significant scalping activity included Na Hoon A's 2024 Last Concert and Younha’s 20th Anniversary Concert. In total, scalped tickets were discovered for 34 different shows.
Rep. Kang stressed the need for stronger penalties to deter illegal ticket sales, stating that the current system infringes on citizens' cultural rights. She called for technical and logistical measures to prevent ticket scalping and urged for stricter enforcement to make the consequences outweigh the profits gained from such illegal activities.
