Jang Yoon Joo transforms in new film 'Good Faith' as she tackles a deeply personal role

On October 15th, actors Jang Yoon Joo and rising star Choi Soo In attended the media screening of their film 'Good Faith' at CGV Yongsan I’Park Mall in Yongsan, Seoul. Director Kim Hyun Jung also joined them to discuss the movie, which is set to premiere on October 30th.

'Good Faith' follows Heeyeon, a high school teacher stressed by infertility, as she faces turmoil upon discovering her student Yumi's pregnancy. As Heeyeon reflects on Yumi's circumstances, the film raises questions about the nature of goodwill and the moral boundaries of helping others. The film is directed by Kim Hyun Jung, known for her debut feature 'Flow.'

Director Kim explained her motivation for directing the film: “The project came with an existing script, which the production team presented to me. The story immediately captured my interest. While my previous film 'Flow' focused on realism and conflict, this new film takes a step further in exploring human understanding and connection, which aligned with my own creative interests.”

Kim also discussed her reasons for casting Jang Yoon Joo and Choi Soo In. “Both actors left strong impressions in their previous works. As both a director and an audience member, I was curious to see how they would bring their characters to life. I was incredibly happy and excited watching them perform on set.”

Jang Yoon Joo, who previously appeared in successful films like 'Veteran' and 'Citizen Duk Hee,' takes on a completely different role in 'Good Faith.' In the film, she plays Heeyeon, a high school teacher dealing with infertility, who faces emotional chaos when one of her students, Yumi, becomes pregnant.

Jang shared her thoughts on the role: “When I first read the script, I immediately knew this was the kind of story I love. While it didn’t have one big explosive moment, it touched my heart in subtle ways. More than anything, I felt a strong desire to help Yumi as a character. I was thrilled to hear that Choi Soo In would be playing Yumi because I’m a fan of her work.” She added, “I wanted to show a different side of myself compared to the vibrant characters I’ve played in commercial films.”

Jang, who was simultaneously filming the drama 'Queen of Tears,' explained how she approached the film: “Unlike commercial films, I wanted to express a calm and lyrical side, like the music that plays during the end credits of this film.

Interestingly, 80% of the outfits Heeyeon wears in the film are my own clothes. I’ve done the same for previous projects like 'Veteran,' 'Three Sisters,' and 'Queen of Tears.' As someone with a background in fashion, I enjoy imagining what kind of clothes a character would wear, and I felt Heeyeon would look best in simple, unembellished outfits.”

Choi Soo In, who plays the role of Yumi, a high school student struggling with an unexpected pregnancy, spoke about her connection to the character: “When I first read the script, I had just graduated from high school, and I felt that Yumi’s personality and circumstances were similar to my own. The film's exploration of 'good faith' in the relationship between the teacher and student made me excited to work with Jang Yoon Joo.”

Regarding the challenges of portraying her character, Choi shared, “Since I haven’t personally experienced pregnancy or childbirth, I only had a basic understanding of it. While portraying Yumi, I had to understand the physical and emotional pain involved, so I asked my mom for advice. I was also fortunate to have Jang Yoon Ju on set, who has experienced pregnancy herself, so I often asked her for guidance during filming.”

Jang Yoon Joo concluded the event by sharing her hopes for the film’s reception: “After shooting a film, I’ve heard other actors and directors ask audiences to ‘please support our movie.’ I used to wonder why they would say that, but now I completely understand. We worked really hard on this film in a short amount of time, and I hope many people come to the theaters to watch it. I want to say, ‘please support us,’ but I’ll keep it subtle—I'll maintain my edge (laughs). Please spread the word about our film!”
