Former girl group INSTAR member DJ Yesong (24, real name Ahn Ye Song), who caused the death of a delivery worker in his 50s while driving under the influence, has changed her stance during the appeal trial, stating, "I plan to give up my career and dreams." In the first trial, Ahn received a 10-year prison sentence.
During the appeal hearing on September 6 at the Seoul Central District Court, the prosecution requested a 15-year prison sentence, the same as the initial trial's recommendation.
Ahn's new lawyer emphasized that she acknowledges the charges and is remorseful, stating, "She drank excessively at an industry event and drove while intoxicated and has no recollection of the incident. She understands the seriousness of needing alcohol addiction treatment."
In the initial trial, Ahn's defense admitted to most of the charges but suggested some responsibility lay with the victim. They argued, "If the victim had gone to the secondary road, the accident might not have occurred."
They also claimed Ahn only attended the drinking event because "as an entertainer, she was invited by broadcasting professionals," and that she had "exceptional talent, representing Korea through international performances." The defense asked for leniency.
In her final statement, Ahn tearfully apologized, saying, "I sincerely apologize to the victim and his family for the precious life lost because of me. This is entirely my fault, with no excuses. I will live the rest of my life with a heart full of repentance." She added, "I will give up my career and dreams and never drive again."
The incident occurred on February 3 at 4:30 a.m. in the Gangnam district of Seoul, where Ahn, heavily intoxicated, struck and killed a 54-year-old delivery driver with her Mercedes-Benz SUV. She was arrested and later sentenced to 10 years in prison in the initial trial.
The court criticized her for being so drunk she couldn’t remember causing two accidents, adding that after the first accident, she asked another driver, "Do I look really drunk?" indicating she was fully aware of her intoxicated state. The court emphasized the severity of the crime but also noted it was her first offense and that she had reached a settlement with the victim's family.
Public outrage was fueled when it was revealed that after the accident, Ahn was seen holding only her pet dog, neglecting to provide aid to the victim.
