A disturbing threat targeting the K-pop group NewJeans has surfaced online, raising alarms among fans and the public.

On August 20th, fans of NewJeans reported that an anonymous user, identified as "A," repeatedly posted messages on an online community stating intentions to "XX NewJeans."

Although the posts have since been deleted, traces remain on platforms like Google. The user also indirectly pinpointed the group's dorm location during a live broadcast, further escalating concerns with a threat to return with more detailed information.

In response, fans have been capturing the posts in PDF format and submitting them to authorities. HYBE, the agency representing NewJeans, told Sports World, "We will look into the matter," and added that regular legal actions, including lawsuits, are ongoing.

This is not the first time that threats have been directed at NewJeans. In June, a knife attack threat targeting the group was posted online, prompting fans to report the incident to the police. The post, titled "Bought this to use at a NewJeans concert," included a picture of a Japanese-style knife, which was later revealed to be an image taken from an online shopping site.

Even if a threat is not carried out, such acts are typically prosecuted as criminal intimidation when the target is specified. If preparations for a crime are confirmed, charges such as attempted murder or assault can be added. Criminal intimidation can result in up to three years in prison or a fine of up to 5 million won (approximately 3,800 US dollars), while special intimidation can lead to up to seven years in prison or a fine of up to 10 million won (approximately 7,600 US dollars). Attempted murder can carry a maximum sentence of ten years.

The recent threats against NewJeans are part of a broader trend of anonymous online threats targeting celebrities, which have consistently sparked controversy. Other K-pop stars, including IVE's Jang Wonyoung, aespa's Winter, and singer IU, have also been the targets of similar online threats.
