Investigation into drug allegations involving actor Lee Sun Gyun and other celebrities concludes.
The investigation into drug allegations involving actor Lee Sun gyun and several other celebrities, which shook the entertainment industry last year, has reportedly come to an end.
Of the 11 individuals who were under investigation, five have been referred to the prosecution. The results of the investigation for the remaining six have not been disclosed.
The Incheon District Prosecutors’ Office indicted a club manager (referred to as Ms. A), a doctor (Mr. B) who supplied drugs to Ms. A, and an individual (Mr. C) who allegedly blackmailed Lee Sun Gyun. Other individuals, including a club employee and a composer, were referred to the Seoul Central District Prosecutors’ Office and the Anyang Branch of the Suwon District Prosecutors’ Office.
Among the six individuals who were not referred to the Incheon District Prosecutors’ Office, one was a third-generation chaebol whose case was transferred to a different police station, while some of the others were not charged.
A police representative stated, “There are no ongoing investigations related to this case,” but added, “We cannot disclose the investigation results for the remaining six individuals.”
Criticism has emerged from legal circles and within the police, arguing that the police arbitrarily decide whether to disclose investigation results based on their own subjective standards.
A lawyer who previously worked in law enforcement commented, “If the investigation had been well-conducted and had not faced much criticism, the police would have likely held a press briefing as usual. However, because the investigation ended inconclusively and received considerable criticism, they seem to have decided not to announce the final results.”
The lawyer further noted, “While there are regulations on police public relations, the criteria for disclosing case details are ambiguous. The criteria need to be reevaluated to strike an appropriate balance between the presumption of innocence and the public’s right to know.”
Meanwhile, Lee Sun Gyun’s drug use allegations came to light in October of last year during a local newspaper report while the police were still in the preliminary investigation stage. He was summoned for questioning three times.
Similarly, singer G-Dragon, who was also implicated in the drug use allegations, complied with the police’s summons.
However, both Lee Sun Gyun and G-Dragon tested negative for drugs in a detailed analysis conducted by the National Forensic Service.
Ultimately, G-Dragon was cleared of all charges, while Lee Sun Gyun passed away in December last year during the ongoing investigation, leading to a “no indictment” decision due to the lack of prosecutorial authority.
