Cast of Netflix series 'The Frog' introduce their characters
Actors Kim Yun Seok, Yoon Kye Sang, Go Min Si, and Lee Jung Eun from the Netflix series 'The Frog' shared insights into the show and their characters.
'The Frog' is a suspense thriller that tells the story of people whose peaceful lives are disrupted by the arrival of a mysterious guest in the middle of summer, leading them into a whirlwind of uncontrollable events.
Kim Yun Seok stars as Young-ha, who runs a secluded pension in the woods. After moving away from Seoul to fulfill his wife’s wish, he now operates the pension alone, surrounded by memories of their time together. However, the unexpected arrival of a guest named Seong-a (played by Go Min Si) pulls him into a series of uncontrollable events.
Kim Yun Seok described his character, saying, "Young-ha is in constant conflict throughout the series. Seong-a continuously provokes him. I wanted to convey and express the battle between Seong-a, who tries to conquer Young-ha by planting a monster inside him, and Young-ha, who resists her."
This marks Kim Yun Seok's return to a series after nearly 17 years, following his role in the 2006-2007 MBC drama 'Make the Most of What You Have.'
Speaking about his return, he said, "This is my first Netflix project and my first series in a long time. I believe this work will resonate with audiences both domestically and internationally. I hope more powerful narratives like this will continue to emerge."
Yoon Kye Sang plays Sang-joon, the owner of a motel with a view of the lake and a devoted family man. His life takes a drastic turn when he receives a mysterious guest, putting everything he holds dear at risk.
Yoon Kye Sang explained, "I wanted to portray the essence of a sincere and kind person, so I aimed to strip away anything unnecessary and approach the character with purity. There are moments when a person who has lived a diligent, loving life suddenly faces a huge shock but cannot immediately express their emotions. I wanted to navigate those gaps carefully."
He added, "This project had a unique charm that deeply resonated with me as an actor. It’s a work I have no regrets about, and I’m happy to have had such a rare experience."
Go Min Si plays Seong-a, the unwelcome guest who disrupts Young-ha’s peaceful life. Seong-a becomes obsessed with Young-ha's pension, causing significant turmoil in his life.
Go Min Si shared, "I remember feeling a chill throughout my body every time I read the script. The story’s flow and the relationships between the characters were so intense that I couldn't help but be completely absorbed." She added, "Seong-a was the most challenging character I’ve ever played. I didn’t want her to come across as overly simple or predictable; I wanted to create something entirely new with this character," hinting at a powerful transformation in her acting.
Lee Jung Eun plays Bomin, a former ace detective who now works as a police officer and persistently digs into the case. With a natural instinct for catching criminals, she brings another layer of tension to the story with her unique approach to the investigation.
Lee Jung Eun explained, "I once watched a documentary where a detective mentioned that you need to be able to read a criminal to catch them, and that there’s a thrill in making the arrest. I approached Bomin’s character from the perspective that the 'desire to catch' drives her, beyond just professional duty."
She continued, "I’ve often played spontaneous and emotional characters, but Bomin is different. I collaborated closely with the director to learn and develop new aspects, like driving and handling a gun, and approaching the case in a different way."
'The Frog' will be released on Netflix on August 23 KST.
