In a significant milestone, Seventeen has been appointed as UNESCO Goodwill Ambassadors for Youth, marking the first time a K-pop artist has received such an honor from UNESCO.
Pledis Entertainment, the group's agency, attributed this recognition to Seventeen's unwavering commitment to infusing their musical journey with global youth engagement since their debut in 2015.
UNESCO appoints individuals with global prominence across various fields as Goodwill Ambassadors to increase worldwide interest and participation in its ideals and activities. Notably, Seventeen and UNESCO have collaborated in the past on the impactful #GoingTogether campaign, advocating for the importance of education.
Moreover, Seventeen participated in the 13th UNESCO Youth Forum held at the UNESCO headquarters in November last year, where they interacted with youth representatives from over 170 countries. During the event, the members delivered a special session, conveying the message that solidarity among youth and education can change the future of youth and the planet.
Seventeen is scheduled to attend the appointment ceremony for Youth Ambassadors at the UNESCO headquarters in Paris, France, on June 26 KST. On this occasion, the members will engage in discussions with UNESCO director general Audrey Azoulay and share their specific plans and sentiments through an acceptance speech.
Audrey Azoulay, expressed enthusiasm about the partnership, stating, "Seventeen and UNESCO share a commitment to empowering youth to lead change and address the challenges of our time. Through their music and positive energy, Seventeen has inspired and supported youth worldwide. After several successful collaborations, I am delighted to welcome Seventeen members as part of the UNESCO Goodwill Ambassadors on June 26."
