Previously, POT, the designer of the logo for the boy group Seventeen's newly released song “Cheers to youth,” took to her personal social media upon discovering Sungkyunkwan school festival’s poster featuring font that looks nearly identical to her work. It is also made known that they have sold merchandize with said font for profit.
In response, Sungkyunkwan University’s College of Humanities' 56th Student Council posted an official apology on June 1, stating that they are sorry for using typography that is highly similar to an artist's work without permission, and that they have “crossed a line that should not have been crossed due to our ambition, and there is no room for excuses.”
In the apology, the student council refers to the act of ‘plagiarism’ as ‘a high degree of similarity’, and does not specify the direction of the proceeds or future measures, leading to even greater public criticism.
After receiving the apology, the original designer said, “Designing, especially typography, is a time-consuming task. Pressing one button incorrectly is called a mistake. If the artist claims to be completely unaware that such a high degree of similarity is plagiarism, there is nothing more I can say about it, but if you are going to continue designing in the future, you need to distinguish between references and plagiarism. I hope something like this won’t happen again.”
