South Korean basketball player Heo Woong (31) is currently at the center of controversy for his ongoing lawsuit against his ex-girlfriend, 'A'.
On June 26, it was revealed that Heo Woong had filed a lawsuit with the Seoul Gangnam Police Station against his ex-girlfriend 'A', whom he accused of threatening, blackmail, and stalking. Heo Woong's side claimed that 'A' had demanded 300 million KRW (~ $216,000 USD), or else she would expose his private life to the public.
According to Heo Woong's side, he and 'A' began dating in late 2018. However, due to various differences, they broke off the relationship and then got back together several times, before ending the relationship altogether in December of 2021. During the 3-years, 'A' became pregnant twice, then underwent an abortion both times.
Reportedly, after her second pregnancy, 'A' brought up the topic of marriage, demanding that they get married before she gave birth. However, Heo Woong said, "I would need to think about it some more," rejecting the idea. The basketball player allegedly still wished for 'A' to give birth to the child, stating that he would "take responsibility".
Heo Woong's side claims that 'A's attitude transformed completely after he rejected the idea of marriage, threatening her with messages saying, "I'm going to die before your eyes," and even breaking into his residence without permission.
While the issue initially became publicized following Heo Woong's decision to sue 'A' for threatening, blackmail, and stalking, many netizens were more shocked by the details of Heo Woong's relationship with 'A'. Shortly after the news made headlines, Heo Woong apologized to his fans on SNS for "causing a disturbance," and asked them to "trust me and wait for me." Many of his fans, however, responded to Heo Woong's apology with criticism, particularly raising concerns over how Heo Woong would "take responsibility" over a newborn child without marriage.
Meanwhile, Heo Woong currently plays for Busan KCC Egis in the Korean Basketball League 1 and is also a member of the South Korean national team. Last year, he was voted the most popular player at the 'KBL1 All-Star Games' for the third consecutive year.
