BTOB member and solo act Changsub has been busy trying his hands at different activities. You can see him doing activities with the vocal powerhouse group BTOB, entertaining the viewers with his fun-filled, comedic variety shows, singing OSTs, and doing musical acting, among others. This is a testament to Changsub's eagerness to challenge himself in various roles, showcasing his talents beyond music.

"Every moment is a challenge, and I try my best to overcome it," he told allkpop. 

On April 30th, Changsub released his new solo single, “그래, 늘 그랬듯 언제나 (As always),” in about a year, following “I Guess I Loved You” in 2023. He's also been active in dropping original soundtracks (OSTs), including “Heavenly fate,” “Freedom,” and “It's Alright” as his newest ones.

Not only that, but his recently-concluded musical performance in 'Winter Wanderer' has earned him praise for his skills and nuanced expression with his portrayal of Han Min Woo, the protagonist. 

After the show's farewell in February, Changsub started to embark on BTOB's 2024 fan con, titled 'OUR DREAM,' the following month. The tour spans 5 cities, including Seoul, Manila, Japan, Hong Kong, and draws to a close in Thailand on May 26th.

Amidst Changsub’s busy schedules, we had the chance to talk to him about his music journey and his desire to try acting as well. Read our exclusive interview with him below!

allkpop: Congratulations on your new music! Your recent OST, “Heavenly fate,” is doing so well on domestic charts!

Changsub: First of all, thank you so much for loving “Heavenly fate”!

allkpop: Tell us more about “As always.”  What do you want to convey with the song, and why do you think this is the best time to release it?

Changsub: The newly released “As always” is a song that tells the story I wanted to tell Melody (BTOB’s fandom name). And since it’s a song that contains the heart of “We will be together as always,” I thought that this was the best time to release “As always” considering all the situations including BTOB’s circumstances.

allkpop: In an interview from 2017, you said that you wanted to be a rockstar. Until now, is rock still your No. 1 genre? 

Changsub: Yes! Until now, I still like rock the most. I believe I’m achieving it one by one as a solo artist.

allkpop: You said in an interview in 2018 that when you were preparing for your first mini-album ‘Mark,’ you had difficulties reaching high notes. And recently, you had to take a hiatus due to throat issues. Whenever that difficulty happens, do you worry much about how you’ll do as a singer? What’s your mindset that helps you to face that kind of situation?

Changsub: I don’t think I should be depressed by the situation I’m in. I've learned to just accept it. I think the time has come to focus on improving myself. I will continue to move forward without stopping, and I think this mindset is the way to overcome such situations.

allkpop: You’ve built your name in the musical acting industry as well, with ‘Winder Wanderer’ being your latest project. What do you find rewarding and interesting in being a musical actor, and what has developed?

Changsub: The acting is so enjoyable and great. If there is a part that I was able to develop in my recent project, it's that I’ve been able to take a bit of a breather.

allkpop: You’re a singer and a musical actor, but I was wondering if you’re also interested in working in the acting industry — acting in dramas or movies? Did that come to your mind at one point?

Changsub: Of course, I’m interested! But I will try to proceed slowly and not in a hurry. I am very curious and excited about how I’ll be captured on camera if I do appear.

allkpop: I’ve seen you perform at the BTOB concert in Manila on April 7th! Your vocals are insane! Could you share with us how you usually warm up before a show? 

Changsub: First of all, thank you! We prepared for the live performance as if it were real, but this time, I lip-synced partly because of my voice condition. I can’t wait to show you the full live performance!

allkpop: Has there ever been a time when you think you’re lacking or your voice isn’t enough even though you did well in the eyes of people? How do you usually overcome that kind of situation?

Changsub: I never for a moment thought that I was a perfect or talented singer. That’s why I always try to study, research, and challenge myself. Every moment is a challenge for me, and I try my best to overcome it.

allkpop: You’ve been so busy these days. Is there anything you’d like your fans to anticipate from you in the coming months and years? Please leave a message!

Changsub: I hope my throat gets better quickly so I can sing for you all again. I’m working hard on my treatment with the goal of [performing better in] the second half of this year, so please wait a little bit! Thank you always and I love you! Yejiapsa! [sends heart]
