Ha Jung-woo and Yeo Jin-goo meet in the tight confines of an airplane in the new film "Hijacking."
Taking place in 1971, the movie depicts the dramatic hijacking of a commercial airliner over South Korea, with Ha Jung-woo portraying the co-pilot who strives to protect the passengers, and Yeo Jin-goo in his debut villain role as the hijacker intent on diverting the aircraft to North Korea.
The film's press conference was held on May 22 at CGV Yongsan I'Park in Seoul, attended by director Kim Sung-han and actors Ha Jung-woo, Yeo Jin-goo, Sung Dong-il, and Chae Soo-bin. "Hijacking," directed by Kim Sung-han, is based on a true event, which the director felt was already cinematic in its real-life form. This marks Kim's directorial debut, having been inspired by the harrowing tale he heard while working as an assistant director on another project.
Ha Jung-woo discussed the challenges of his role, noting it was the most demanding shooting experience he has ever had, requiring intense physical and emotional effort. Yeo Jin-goo shared his excitement about playing a complex antagonist in a historically charged setting, focusing on creating a gritty and realistic portrayal of the hijacker without glorifying the character.
The ensemble cast, including around 60 actors playing passengers, added a dynamic layer to the film, with veteran actor Sung Dong-il praising the camaraderie and supportive atmosphere on set, particularly in such a cramped setting. Director Kim highlighted the meticulous attention to period detail and the challenges of recreating a discontinued airplane model for the set.
"Hijacking" is set to release on June 21, promising an intense, character-driven exploration of a critical moment in Korean aviation history.
