On April 11 KST, SM Entertainment issued an update on the company's position against malicious online attacks targeting BoA.
The label stated,
"Hello, this is SM Entertainment.
This statement pertains to our label artist, BoA.
Recently, in light of the continuous accounts of false rumors, malicious attacks, insults, and slander targeting our artist on various SNS platforms and online communities, we have proceeded with large-scale lawsuits both in Korea and overseas with the help of law firm Sejong, in charge of all legal action related to the violation of our artists' rights, along with the help of various overseas legal consulting firms.
Since our previous statement, we have collected plenty of evidence from past posts, and have also made progress in our lawsuits against special cases including cyber 'tow trucks' (malicious online accounts). We will continue to collect information and make sure that assailants are held legally accountable for their actions.
The malicious attacks have reached a degree of severity that makes it difficult for one single person to bear them all, and as a result, our artist is currently enduring difficult times while experiencing mental strains. We will not show any leniency nor will we accept any settlements until individuals are held legally accountable, and so we hope that readers use this statement to acknowledge that all actions which fall into the category of malicious posting can become targets of legal repercussions.
Once again, we remind you that such actions are clear violations of the law which harm an individual's honor and dignity, and further warn that existing laws make it possible for those who commit such violations to face strict punishment.
We plead that these reckless attacks against our artist stop.
Thank you."
Many fans, however, criticized SM Entertainment's statement, noting that the statement did not in fact contain much wording that differed from the label's past warnings against malicious online attacks. The fans urged SM Entertainment to "show us results with real actions, not just mere words".
Meanwhile, BoA recent garnered attention by hinting at her desire to retire from the entertainment industry.
And overseas... lol. Sounds like a lot of scaremongering from SM that will do nothing legally. Defamation laws are not the same everywhere, specially not as lax as korean are. Also, a foreigner cannot be sued for breaking the law in korea if they did not do it in korean soil, so... good luck with that one.
