Amidst ongoing discussions about LE SSERAFIM's live performance at the Coachella Festival, Sakura addressed the controversy on a fan platform, sparking further debate.
On April 15 KST, Sakura shared her reflections on the criticism garnered during their performance at the Coachella Festival in the US, expressing her perspective in Japanese. She pondered on the essence of being on stage, questioning whether it's solely about flawless execution or about creating a memorable experience for the audience. She aimed to craft a stage that resonated with the audience, leaving them with fond memories of the day.
Acknowledging potential immaturity in the eyes of some, Sakura asserted that their Coachella performance was the best they've delivered, emphasizing the importance of believing in one's feelings regardless of external opinions.
LE SSERAFIM's Coachella set, comprising 10 songs over 40 minutes, received praise from foreign media for its safe execution amid enthusiastic audience response. However, online viewers noted shortcomings in their live skills, sparking a mixed reaction of support and criticism.
Subsequent to Sakura's statement, public sentiment within the K-pop community has shifted negatively, with some disapproving of her rationalization. Comments insinuating 'Japanese mindset' have triggered criticism towards Japanese members of other K-pop groups.
Discussions expanded to include evaluations of Japanese members across various groups, with remarks touching on their vocal positions, skills, and historical context. Some questioned the necessity of Japanese members, while others defended against nationality-based discrimination, highlighting instances of successful Japanese members in K-pop.
Amid the discourse, voices advocating against blanket criticism of Japanese members and condemning discriminatory remarks based on nationality have emerged.
No no no. I know A LOT of Japanese idols that are AMAZING singers. This is not a plausible excuse.
The problem is Kpop focus too much on visuals and forget about singing skills. There's a lot of models, entertainers and actors in Kpop but only a few singers. This has nothing to do with her being Japanese.
